There are sports you can enjoy casually, and then there is tennis.
One clean forehand and suddenly you are thinking about your footwork. You start noticing string tension. You have opinions about court shoes. A friendly Saturday match somehow becomes a third-set tiebreak that nobody involved intends to lose.
Tennis has been part of our family's life for years, and living in Northwest Hills puts us within reach of a surprisingly deep tennis scene.
My boys trained at Westover Hills Club, occasionally trained with MAC360, and today we play and train at the Hurt Family Tennis Center at the Dell JCC. We have had great coaches at all three. Along the way we have played on school courts, club courts and public courts, and made more trips than I can count for racquets, strings, shoes and all the other things tennis players suddenly discover they "need."
So rather than give you another generic list of Austin tennis courts, here is how I would actually think about tennis in and around Northwest Hills.
First, know what kind of court you are heading to
Austin has a mix of City courts, school facilities, reservation-based centers and private clubs. They do not all operate the same way. Before you load up the racquets, check the current access rules, especially at school facilities and private clubs.

Map: tennis courts and clubs around Northwest Hills
Here is the court map I would keep handy. It brings the Northwest Hills-area options together with a few Austin clubs and public facilities that are worth the short drive.
Anderson High School is one of the most useful local options
Anderson High School deserves special mention because it has something many school tennis facilities do not: a dedicated USTA-hosted website with an online reservation system.
The current Anderson system says reservations can be made three days in advance and provides a separate process for league and group reservations. If you live in Northwest Hills, that page is worth bookmarking.
Anderson High School Tennis | Book a court
Murchison Middle School and McCallum High School also have tennis facilities and school tennis programs, but I would not treat every school court as a drop-in public facility. School use comes first, and access rules can differ by campus. McCallum is at 5600 Sunshine Drive, and current Austin court resources list its courts among local play options, but verify access before heading over.
The clubs closest to Northwest Hills
Westover Hills Club
Westover is part of our own tennis story. My boys trained there, and we had great coaches along the way.
The club currently lists four LED-lit outdoor courts, one indoor multi-purpose court, year-round junior and adult instruction, league play and USTA Junior Team Tennis. Court reservations are for members, while the club says members and nonmembers can create CourtReserve accounts to register for programs where offered.
Hurt Family Tennis Center at the Dell JCC
This is where we currently play and train.
The Hurt Family Tennis Center at Shalom Austin has six lighted tennis courts and offers adult tennis, youth programs, private lessons, clinics, camps and Junior Team Tennis. Shalom Austin says court reservations are for Dell JCC members.
We have had a very positive experience with the coaches here. I also like that there are ways to keep developing as a player instead of treating every lesson as a one-off.
Great Hills Country Club
A little farther north, Great Hills and Jester have another substantial tennis option. Great Hills Country Club currently lists eight lighted courts available seven days a week, along with lessons and tennis programming.
Courtyard Racquet Club
Courtyard deserves more than a passing mention, especially from Northwest Hills.
Located at 5608 Courtyard Drive, just west of Loop 360 off RM 2222, Courtyard is an established private racquet club and a natural option for players who want tennis to be a regular part of the week.
I also like the setting. The club sits in The Courtyard, the Lake Austin-area neighborhood tucked between Northwest Hills and the river. It is one of those places where tennis is not simply something you drive across town to do. It is part of the immediate surroundings.
Public courts worth knowing beyond the neighborhood
Caswell Tennis Center
Caswell is an Austin tennis institution. The center says it was built in 1946, and today it has eight lighted courts, adult clinics, junior programming, a full pro shop and ball-machine reservations.
It is not the closest option to Northwest Hills, but it is one of those places Austin tennis players tend to know.
Austin High Tennis Center
Austin High is another useful Central Austin option. The City describes it as a shared facility between Austin Parks and Recreation and AISD. The courts are free and open to the public when they are not reserved for school use. During the school year, public play begins after school-use hours, and AISD-sponsored events take priority.
City of Austin access information for Austin High Tennis Center
Bailey and Ramsey
For smaller park-court options, Bailey Neighborhood Park at 1101 W. 33rd Street and Ramsey Neighborhood Park at 4301 Rosedale Avenue are both worth knowing. City records and current Austin court resources identify tennis courts at both parks.
If your first choice is busy, having two or three backup courts in your mental map is one of the underrated skills of Austin tennis.
For junior players, keep an eye on JTT
If your kids are into tennis, or starting to get serious about it, keep an eye on Junior Team Tennis, usually shortened to JTT.
This is one of my favorite parts of junior tennis because tennis can otherwise become a very individual sport. JTT adds a team format with singles and doubles and gives young players regular match experience.
Tennis Austin currently organizes JTT for junior players and publishes the season calendar, formats and player resources online. The schedule changes by season, so this is one area where I would go to the current page rather than rely on an old screenshot or saved calendar.

MAC360 and the academy route
My boys also occasionally trained with MAC360, another part of their tennis development.
MAC360 currently lists Vandegrift High School at 9500 McNeil Drive as its training location and offers intermediate and advanced competitive programming.
Academy tennis is a different experience from simply reserving a court or taking an occasional lesson. Once a player starts thinking about tournaments, conditioning, match construction and higher-volume training, a program like this starts to make more sense.
Where I go for tennis gear
At some point, tennis becomes a sport involving a surprising amount of equipment.
Racquets. Strings. Different strings. Different tensions. Shoes that actually work for lateral movement. Overgrips. Bags. Then someone tells you to demo a different frame and the cycle starts again.
For us, The Tennis Shop in Davenport Village has been a great resource, and the team there has always been great to work with.
The shop is at 3801 N. Capital of Texas Highway, Suite G-140. It carries racquets, tennis shoes, apparel, accessories and strings, offers stringing, and has a racquet demo program.
Private-club tennis a little farther out
Westwood Country Club
Westwood Country Club is a private club at 3808 W. 35th Street and one of the best-known tennis addresses in Austin right now because it hosts the ATX Open.
Even if you are not a club member, tournament week gives Austin tennis fans a chance to see the grounds transformed for professional tennis.
Austin Country Club
Austin Country Club at 4408 Long Champ Drive has ten lighted courts, including eight hard courts and two Har-Tru courts, along with instruction, clinics, league tennis and junior development programming.
The 2027 ATX Open brings professional tennis right into Austin
This is where things get really fun.
The 2027 ATX Open is scheduled for February 20 through February 28, 2027 at Westwood Country Club. Qualifying is scheduled for February 20 and 21, with the main draw running February 22 through February 28.
The ATX Open is a WTA Tour event. That means you can go from hitting an evening match around Northwest Hills to sitting a few miles away watching professional women's tennis.
Watching high-level tennis in person is completely different from watching it on television. The speed, movement, sound of the ball and point construction make a lot more sense when you are close enough to see it.
If you have a junior player, take them.

And yes, those Four Seasons clay courts are real
There is another tennis project people are going to be talking about, but it needs an important clarification.
The Four Seasons Private Residences Lake Austin is a private residential development, not a public tennis club and not the Four Seasons hotel downtown. Four Seasons currently lists the project's opening date as 2029.
Published Four Seasons residential materials describe an athletic center with an indoor clay tennis court and an outdoor tennis court, along with other private athletic amenities.
So yes, the clay court is real. No, it is not a court you can book for Saturday morning.

Or maybe your next tennis court is in the backyard
Of course, there is another solution to finding an open court.
Have your own.
If leaving home feels like a lot of work before the first serve, or you simply like the idea of walking out the back door with a racquet in your hand, there are Austin homes with private tennis courts as well as homes in communities where tennis courts are listed among the available amenities.
I have set up a live search specifically for them. It looks for active and coming-soon properties where the MLS identifies Tennis Court(s) in either exterior features or community features. Inventory changes, so it is worth checking back.

And if what you want is more specific, maybe a private court, a particular surface, room to build one, or a home a few minutes from the club where you already play, tell me what you are looking for. MLS filters only tell part of the story.
Sometimes the best tennis commute is no commute at all.
Tennis fits Austin particularly well
I think part of the appeal of tennis here is that you can make it whatever you want.
You can hit for an hour after work. Play league doubles. Put a junior player into JTT. Train seriously. Join a club. Book Anderson. Go to Caswell. Take a lesson. Spend too much time debating strings at The Tennis Shop. Or sit at Westwood in February and watch players do things with a tennis ball that make the rest of us reconsider whether we have ever actually played the same sport.
For us, tennis has moved through Westover, MAC360 and now the JCC, with great coaches helping along the way. That is one reason I appreciate how many options we have around Northwest Hills.
The court that makes sense today may not be the court you need two years from now.
The good news is that around here, there is probably another one a few minutes away.
